KATE ROBINSON

The sign of the Leo is cast in lead and is embossed with gold leaf. It is derived from a picture in a fifteenth century text called Aurora Consurgens (1420). This beautiful book, by an anonymous author, includes enigmatic coloured illustrations full of significance and meaning. The image in question shows a woman who has just given birth, with the signs of the zodiac in a circle around her. The circle, according to Mediaeval philosophy represented perfection.
