SNOWCASE

SUSIE MACMURRAY

Susie MacMurray’s work is driven by a direct response to materials. Drawn to the tactile and sensual, she explores how physical things can produce the emotive responses which form part of her landscape as a former orchestral musician.

Her background in continual disciplined practice also finds resonance within the history of feminine repetitive activity. Indeed the work always contains a strong element of meticulous, labour intensive effort. MacMurray obsessively builds textures by the layering and weaving; she repeats gestures; multiplies and deconstructs her materials. In this method of work she references the feminine domestic context and, at the same time, hints at the subversive wisdom of fairy tales. Spinning yarns and weaving plots: knowledge of both the dangers and the possibilities of life becomes embedded in the process and its product. These investigations of the sumptuous nature of the physical world also carry an inherent understanding of transience and fragility, often being constructed from eventually perishable materials.
